Friday June 22, 2018 Texas Crew's trailer was headed to Oklahoma City with boats from Texas Crew, ARC and Texas Rowing Center to compete in the Stars & Stripes Regatta. During the trip the trailer chain disconnected and was dragging on the road until the trailer became unhitched and rolled into a grassy area on the side of the road. The sparks from the chain and the dry grass were enough to light the flame that destroyed the trailer, the boats, oars and other equipment. Luckily, no one was hurt but the team lost the trailer, their newest 4+ (Son of Reichner), two pairs, oars, and their tool box.
The team was still able to compete in OKC with the help from the local rowing community which lent them, and the athletes from the other two clubs, equipment for race day. The results from the Stars & Stripes regatta can be found here.
Without missing a beat the team's president, David Garza, created a GoFundMe page to raise the funds to get the team ready for fall. The team was able to get their story out to various news outlets and shared throughout social media. Many news stations picked up the story, including FOX7, CBS, etc. USROWING and Row2k also shared their story throughout the rowing community. Within 48 hours the team has raised $21,000, over 80% of their goal.
If you are interested in donating via the GoFundMe or through PayPal any contribution will be greatly appreciated and will help this generation of Texas Crew get back in the saddle as quickly as possible. Spread the word so we can get the last $4K needed to bring Texas Crew back to race ready by August!
